6th Grade Overview

Religion

The curriculum is based on Old and New Testament Bible stories as well as Martin Luther and the Reformation.  The focus of these lessons is the doctrine of Law and Gospel with a strong emphasis on life application.  The memorization of Holy Scripture, the Six Chief Parts of Christian Doctrine (as found in Luther's Small Catechism) and other portions of Christian literature are a key element in these religion lessons.

Reading/Literature

Literacy skills, comprehension, interpreting and evaluating information are taught using a variety of literature.  The elements of a story and vocabulary development are vital components in the curriculum.

Spelling

Spelling patterns, prefixes, suffixes and homophones are the core of study.


English/Writing/Handwriting

The study of the parts of speech, and the use of the writing process; pre-writing, drafting, revising, editing and publishing are emphasized in order to develop effective written communication skills.  Continued reinforcement of correct letter and number formation, neatness and self-evaluation are all part of handwriting instructions.

Mathematics

Students focus on problem solving using addition, subraction, multiplication and division of whole numbers, fractions, and decimals. Basic operations are covered in algebraic form.  Probability, rates, ratios, and geometry concepts are also covered.  Proficiency with multiplication and division facts for 0-9 is stressed.  Great emphasis is placed on students being able to write about mathematical processes.

Social Studies

United States history, World geography, map skills, and cultural diversity are all part of this comprehensive study.

Science

Life Science, Physical Science and Earth Science are covered in our units of study.  Hands-on experimentation is used whenever possible and the Scientific Method is utilized to describe and analyze data.

Health

Students study units covering physical, mental, social and spiritual health.  The focus of these lessons is to assist students in understanding the skills and knowledge needed to maintain a healthy life.

Physical Education

The focus is on developing skills and knowledge of rules and regulations necessary to participate in sports and games.  Emphasis is also placed on developing leadership, cooperation, self-esteem and essential conditioning activities using the President's Physical Fitness Program necessary to achieve lifetime physical fitness.

Spanish

This interactive video-based curriculum focuses on the Spanish language and culture.  Students study the Spanish alphabet, numbers, days of the week, months, colors and other vocabulary using repitition, dictation and music. 

Art

Students study various artists throughout history to gain an appreciation for art.  Hands-on activities using a wide variety of art mediums help teach art concepts, design principles and skills. 

Music/Choir

Classroom music involves in-depth study of music theory including ear training, notation, rhythm, note reading and vocabulary.  Music appreciation is also a component of the curriculum as students study composers and musicians of different periods of music history.  In choir, students apply this music theory and these skills as they work toward proficiency in musical performance.

Seventh and Eighth Grade Overview 

Religion

Students trace the Salvation history through in-depth study of Genesis, Exodus, Numbers, Judges, Kings, Mark, Acts, and the epistles. Emphasis is placed on the study of the Ten Commandments and Lord’s Prayer.  Additional studies delve into typical moral, social, and peer pressure issues and making God-pleasing choices.  The memorization of Holy Scripture, the Six Chief Parts of Christian Doctrine (as found in Luther’s Small Catechism) and other portions of Christian literature are a key element in these religion lessons.  Religion also includes the study of world religions.

Reading/Literature

Extensive reading of classic novels continues through 7th and 8th grade.  Literary analysis, comprehension, and understanding are key components of these classes.  Students explore several genres of literature including science fiction, historical fiction, short story, drama, biography/autobiography, and poetry.  Self evaluation strategies are used by students to improve their performance in reading.

Mathematics

After careful assessment students are placed in general mathematics, pre-algebra, or algebra.  Students review basic math skills and learn many algebraic concepts including solving one- and two-step linear equations; understanding the use of number operations and order of operations including integers; applying problem-solving strategies; demonstrating familiarity with basic properties of commutative, associative, distributive, and identity; solving multi-step equations, including linear and quadratic; graphing linear equations and inequalities; using and manipulating formulas; and factoring trinomials and multiplying binomials.

Social Studies

United States history, World Geography, map skills, and cultural diversity are all part of this comprehensive study.  This study also includes ancient civilizations and medieval history.

Science
